Beginning August 31, the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society resumes its traditional Thursday night free film series, with the showing of “The Naked Prey”, a 1965 adventure movie set in southern Africa. The fall series, which will run every week through November 16th, is entitled “As Fate Would Have It: Survival Stories in Film”. The series includes twelve movies, made between 1958 and 2018, and features such iconic Hollywood stars as James Stewart, Robert Stack, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.
Many of the films are based on true events, and range in settings from outer space to deserts, jungles, oceans and mountain peaks. All of them depict people caught in life threatening situations, and represent some of the best efforts by film makers to tell the stories in realistic and entertaining ways. A complete listing of the movies is available on the FBHPS website at historicfortbayard.org, or by emailing Doug Dinwiddie at historyguy51b@gmail.com.
The movies are shown at the Santa Clara Armory Building, located at 19990 US Highway 180, near the Fort Bayard turnoff. Admission is free, donations are welcome. Concessions are available. Doors open at 6 p.m., with movies showing at 6:30. For more information, call 575-388-4862.

August 27, at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “Unitarian Universalist Flower Ceremony”
The Flower Ceremony is a special Unitarian Universalist "ritual" in an organization that doesn't have traditional sacraments.
Rev. Mana’ar Johnsons will explain the inspiring history behind the ceremony, begun by a European minister who died in a concentration camp.
“It allows us an opportunity to reflect on our community, its beauty and diversity. We consider what gifts we bring, symbolized by a flower we offer, and we are grateful for what others bring to our fellowship. We take home a different flower to remind us of our own beauty and that of others in our lives,” Johnson said.
“It will include beautiful poetry and music, and beautiful photos by Andrew Tree of the wildflowers of Grant County, NM. Bring a single flower with you, but don't worry if you forget, we will have a few extras,” she added.
