“In Love with the World” - Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

JeffGoinAugust 6 at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “In Love with the World”

Jeff Goin, from the Lotus Center will speak about "In Love with the World" a true story by Yongey Mingyur in which the author, unbeknownst to his students and attendants, leaves the comfort of his Buddhist monastery, under the cover of night, with little more than the clothes on his back, to undertake a "wandering retreat" of indefinite duration. While Yongey Mingyur's story is one of great courage, commitment, and trust, it also provides teachings -- by way of example -- on two of the most powerful, important cornerstones of Buddhist view and practice.

“What are these two "cornerstones"? Find out by joining us on August 6, at 10:00 am, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship,” Goin said.

A week of special programming to CELEBRATE COMMUNITY RADIO

A week of special programming to CELEBRATE COMMUNITY RADIO will be held July 31 – August 5 by Gila/Mimbres Community Radio (KURU 89.1 FM). More than two dozen DJs and Program Hosts will showcase local talent with live guests offering music, poetry, literature, commentary, and cultural features, all of it tailored to the needs and interests of Grant County and the surrounding listening area. “Everyone is encouraged to tune their radio to 89.1 FM or stream on the web at GMCR.org – to listen, enjoy, and donate, so our community’s very own independent, nonprofit radio station can continue to flourish,” said Jamie Newton, Chair of GMCR’s Board of Directors. “We’ve added new programs and reorganized our weekly schedule. There’s a lot to discover! We hope our regular listeners will invite their friends to listen to the programs they appreciate, and to join them as supporters whose donations keep this independent station on the air.”

An announcement said that the station, now in its tenth year of broadcasting 24/7 at 10,500 watts, has much to celebrate. Creative entertainment and incisive analysis of current trends and events come from both nationally syndicated sources and local people who prepare original programs and are heard live on the air daily. The station is operated primarily by volunteers, with support and guidance from Manager Marcus Hanson. The building at 519 N. Bullard Street became a permanent home for GMCR/KURU 89.1 FM in 2022, when it was generously donated by owners Janey Katz and Suzi Calhoun. Thanks to a grant of $30,000 from the local philanthropic group, The 30Something, infrastructure improvements are in progress at both the studio in town and the broadcasting site on Pinos Altos Mountain, for greater reliability and ease of operation by the station’s many volunteers.

Come learn about this Silver City native, whose experiences range from a track coach, a Montessori school and senior citizens’ center head cook, a Hawaiian shaved ice shack owner, and more. Her newest venture JBR Smoothies N Juice Bar on Broadway taps into what inspires her most - nourishing the bodies and souls of her customers and in turn encouraging them to reach for what most inspires and motivates them. JBR - named for her three children - hits a deeper note for Amanda too. Five years ago, just before Halloween, she had a stroke - a side effect of open heart surgery she’d had earlier that year. Not only did Amanda have to relearn how to read and write, the experience was the catalyst for her to delve deeper into what matters most to her - nourishing and caring for her body so that she can fully live. She learned that her body is worthy and deserving of nourishment and care and that your body is too. Furthering her knowledge of food as medicine, she started writing recipes for juice blends, smoothies, and shakes.
