Gila National forest reminds you to extinguish your campfire

Drown flames, coals, or ashes with water, stir it in, feel for heat

SILVER CITY, NM, June 28, 2023 – The Gila National Forest reports that human-caused wildfires are well below average so far this year. Since May 1, 2023, seven human-caused fires on the Gila National Forest have burned about 25 acres, compared to 15 human-caused fires that consumed more than 1,500 acres, not including the Black Fire, during that same period last year. This good news is no reason to let down your guard.

Over the past few weekends, patrols have found more than a dozen abandoned campfires that don't count toward this year's seven human-caused fires, unless they escaped their fire ring. Fire prevention patrols routinely inspect fire rings in vacant campsites, looking and feeling for heat. They often find fire rings full of fluffy, white ash that is still hot. These are abandoned campfires.

"Extinguished means cold to the touch with your bare hand," said Gila National Forest Fire Management Officer Gabe Holguin. "Even if there are no flames, a firepit full of coals or ash can easily be brought back to life and spread by wind. If you leave a hot fire unattended, you are taking the risk of causing a wildfire."

Making the decision to light a campfire is making a commitment to stay close by and watch the fire at all times. If you intend to head out for a hike, or go to sleep for the night, or otherwise leave, you must fully extinguish your campfire beforehand by drowning it with water, stirring it in, and feeling for heat. When the coals are cool to the touch with your bare hand, the fire is out.

PFLAG Silver City will be in the Independence Day parade

Silver City, NM, June 26, 2023-----PFLAG Silver City will once again be marching in the Independence Day parade in Silver City on July 4th. Parents, families, friends and neighbors of LGBTQ+ people are invited and encouraged to march along with PFLAG to show their support. The parade begins at 10:00 AM, and most organizations will be lining up on 12th St.

PFLAG is the nation's largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.  PFLAG Silver City president, Damie Nelson, explained, "So much fear, hate, misinformation and myth are being directed at LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender people, that it's vital that friends, family and allies step forward and publicly proclaim their solidarity and support. Silver City and Grant County have a relatively small population, so we know each other.  Imagine the power you have as an individual if you are seen by friends, family and colleagues marching with PFLAG, wearing rainbow colors and carrying an American flag.  Consider how that closeted teen might feel seeing his/her/their teacher, neighbor or pastor marching with PFLAG.  Think about how that parent of a transgender child might feel to see you, their work colleague, marching in support of trans kids. Imagine how welcomed that young gender-expansive neighbor of yours would feel seeing you marching for their rights and well-being.

Gila National Forest offices closed Tuesday, July 4

Celebrate your Independence Day on the Gila; leave the fireworks at home.

SILVER CITY, NM, June 26, 2023 – Gila National Forest offices in Quemado, Reserve, Glenwood, Mimbres, Truth or Consequences, and Silver City will be closed on Tuesday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Normal hours and operations will resume Wednesday, July 5.

“With more than 30 developed campgrounds and nearly 1 million acres of designated wilderness on 3.3 million acres of the Gila National Forest, we have something for everyone to enjoy,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. “The forest is a great place to get away and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature during the summer holidays.”

Leave sparklers, fireworks and other pyrotechnics at home – they are always prohibited on all national forests. Fire danger is currently rated “high” and conditions are approaching “very high”. Before you head out, always check for fire restrictions that could affect your visit. After you arrive, read posted signs to stay current on the status of campfires and other regulations.
