Hope to complete Cold Springs and Sheep Basin prescribed burn units this spring

coldspringsrx vicinitymapRESERVE, NM, May 18, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District is planning  to implement two prescribed burns within the next month. The two prescribed burn units are the 1,674-acre Cold Springs unit, located along Forest Road 94 southeast of Apache Creek, and the 1,608-acre Sheep Basin unit, located south of the Village of Reserve. These prescribed burns are planned to occur as soon as desired weather and fire conditions are aligned.

Low-lying smoke and heavy presence of firefighters on forest roads may periodically impact the  public’s access to areas adjacent to the prescribed fire. If this occurs, road guards and/or signs  will be in place to warn of hazards.

Camera installed at Glenwood Community Slash Pit due to dumping

Community slash pit will close if dumping of illegal items persists

GLENWOOD, NM, May 17, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District reports a large amount of prohibited trash items dumped at the Glenwood Community Slash Pit. Additional signage and a camera will be installed to provide for 24-hour site monitoring.

“This site is used as part of the Catron County Firewise program, a valued partnership that helps remove hazardous vegetation on and adjacent to private lands,” said Acting Glenwood District Ranger Brian Stultz. “It would be extremely disappointing and harmful to the Glenwood community to be forced to close the site due to illegal dumping.”

Several community slash pits exist on the Gila National Forest near adjacent communities, to support ongoing hazardous fuels mitigation on and around private lands.

Museum Curator Javier Marrufo to Discuss Media's Influence on Local Identity, Past and Present

Silver City -- Silver City Museum Curator Javier Marrufo will present the spring season's final community conversation this Saturday, May 20, from 11 am to 12:30 pm at the Silco Theater in historic, downtown Silver City, 311 N. Bullard Street.  Marrufo, a frequent speaker on behalf of the museum, will examine how media has influenced and shaped Silver City's identity and how that impacts daily life, not only in Silver City, but throughout the county.

Early newspapers such as Mining Life promoted the community to the outside world, inviting investors, merchants, miners and others to move to Silver City. The press also shaped the town's identity for local residents by urging and praising civic efforts and accomplishments. However, such publications only told part of the community story, often omitting working class citizens and minorities.

Today, local media still share news of projects and events that impact residents' lives, and also promote the area to tourists and recreation enthusiasts. Whether printed, online or on the air, each media outlet offers a different focus and perspective, based on their primary audiences.

Gila National Forest making progress on prescribed burning

Fire is the best tool to reduce hazardous fuels near at-risk communities

SILVER CITY, NM, May 16, 2023 – The Gila National Forest has completed 9,379 acres of prescribed burning so far this year in 12 separate prescribed fire projects. These projects have reduced hazardous fuels adjacent to communities, protecting public safety and critical infrastructure, while taking steps toward restoring forests, watersheds, and wildlife habitats through use of fire in fire-adapted ecosystems.

“Prescribed fire is the most effective and most efficient tool available for treating forests and woodlands to reduce the buildup of hazardous fuels adjacent to communities,” said Gila National Forest Fire Management Officer, Gabe Holguin. “We develop plans for prescribed burns many months or even years in advance and can only carry them out when fuels and weather conditions support meeting the burn objectives. The plan identifies the acceptable range of weather, fuel moisture, and firefighting resources that must be in place to allow for ignitions to occur.”
