City of Las Vegas, MainStreet de Las Vegas and the New Mexico Economic Development Department were instrumental in facilitating the project which will help revitalize the Northern New Mexico city's economy.

Las Vegas - Today Governor Susana Martinez, Economic Development Secretary Jon Barela and the community of Las Vegas joined Allan Affeldt, Tina Mion and Daniel Lutzick, new owners of the Hotel Castañeda, to celebrate their purchase and plans to restore the hotel that will transform downtown Las Vegas. The Hotel Castañeda is a historic Fred Harvey House hotel built in 1898 and located in the Las Vegas Rail Yard District. The rehabilitated destination hotel and restaurant will serve as an anchor tenant for the Las Vegas MainStreet district and have a spillover effect on other businesses in the area.

"The private capital invested in the Hotel Castañeda represents a great potential for not just the hotel but for the MainStreet de Las Vegas and the city of Las Vegas," said Governor Martinez. "It will be a draw for tourism and have an impact on the local restaurants, art galleries and other small business in Las Vegas as folks travel from all over to visit and stay at the famed Harvey House hotel."

Affeldt recently restored and reopened the La Posada in Winslow, Arizona on historic Route 66.

"We appreciate very much Mr. Affeldt's vision and confidence in the potential of the Hotel Castañeda," said Las Vegas Mayor Alfonzo Ortiz. "Preserving and restoring our historic community helps our economy, families and businesses succeed."

Harvey House hotels, which were set up along the Santa Fe Railway in the late 1800s, have a unique following. The Hotel Castañeda had an impact on tourism in New Mexico back in the 1800s. Since 1948, the Hotel Castañeda has sat vacant.

"The MainStreet program is a great tool in the preservation of our state's cultural and historical heritage," said Secretary Barela, whose department oversees the New Mexico MainStreet Program. "MainStreet has been involved in the revitalization of many New Mexico small towns and we expect the Hotel Castañeda to also stimulate the sale and restoration of other historic buildings repurposing them for small businesses or living spaces as it has in other MainStreet communities."

The local MainStreet non-profit, MainStreet de Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Arts & Cultural District, Mayor Alfonso Ortiz and New Mexico MainStreet were involved in the facilitation of the Hotel Castañeda project.
