Second Interim Meeting to be held in Albuquerque on Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Santa Fe, NM - The Legislative Jobs Council continues to refine its blueprint for creating thousands of New Mexico jobs in the next five to seven years. During the 2014 legislative session, the Jobs Council began the task of building the framework for creating economic base jobs in New Mexico. Some legislation was passed to increase appropriations for economic development and marketing, but much more needs to be done. During its second interim meeting, the Jobs Council will evaluate and refine the proposed measures for job creation in the hopes of identifying and prioritizing specific legislation for the 2015 session. The Jobs Council has also started collecting data on economic development from local entities which will be a key to determining the state's return on investment. A status report on statewide meetings with those local entities will also be given.

The Legislative Jobs Council will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Carpenter's Local Union Hall located at 3900 Pan American Freeway N.E., in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The meeting is open and the public is invited to stay for public comment at 3:30 p.m.

The Interim Jobs Council - comprised of a bipartisan group of Legislators and private industry representatives - estimates more than 160,000 jobs must be created in the next 10 (ten) years to bring New Mexico back to its 2007 employment levels. The council also determined which economic sectors could create the most immediate jobs, where in the state they would likely be created, and the obstacles that would impede or prevent their creation. One of the most significant achievements of the Jobs Council was its focus on collaboration. Democrats and Republicans, business and labor, state and local organizations all came together to reach a consensus on what the job problem is and how to move the state forward with more immediate results.
