What is energy? Can you measure energy if you can't see it? Fifth-graders across New Mexico are receiving instructions and their own personal kit for launching a home energy hunt.

From Nov. 3 to 7, PNM is bringing energy efficiency kits to 4,500 fifth-graders in cities across New Mexico including Alamogordo, Belen, Clayton, Los Lunas, Bosque Farms, Silver City, Deming, Las Vegas and Lordsburg. Student from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe received their kits earlier this year.

Each participating student will receive a kit with easy-to-install items including a low-flow showerhead, faucet aerators, compact fluorescent bulbs and a night light. Guides are also provided for families to complete the installation together and learn how to reduce their energy waste.

"We're teaching students to understand the importance of energy, how they use it every day how to save it at home and why it matters for our environment," said Daniel Trujillo, PNM senior energy efficiency program manager.

The program was designed by the National Energy Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to educating children about energy use.
