State Employee Open House at the New Mexico State Library June 10

Santa Fe, NM - The New Mexico State Library is teaming up with the Office of Archaeological Studies to invite state employees, their family and friends to experience some of the wonderful programs they have to offer on June 10 from 11am - 2pm. If you've ever been interested in flint knapping, ancient New Mexican artifacts, 3-D printing or a banana piano this is the time to find out more information!

The New Mexico State Library is hosting the Makerstate Initiative which travels around the state offering popup makerspaces in public libraries to teach children, young adults and adults how 3-D printing works, how to create and program simple robotics, simple circuitry, computer programming and creating e-textiles. During the Open House participants will have the opportunity to take a 3-D printed selfie.

The Office of Archaeological Studies will be presenting flint knapping which is an ancient practice of forming arrowheads and other stone tools. They will also offer a hands-on exploration of New Mexico archaeology and prehistoric lifeways using a wide range of archaeological artifacts to tell the story. The artifacts are essentially arranged as a time line that begins with the earliest Paleoinidan Clovis and Folsom Points and proceeds through various time periods down to around WW II. They encourage visitors of all ages to have a direct, hands-on experience with a wide range of artifacts as well as talking with an archaeologist. The artifacts inspire the imagination of the patrons and lead to deeper levels of interaction about such things as preservation, cultural diversity, environment, and a wide range of topics.

The New Mexico State Library, located at 1209 Camino Carlos Rey in Santa Fe, has many services available and all state employees are welcome to join us that afternoon for tours of the library and information sessions on resources available to all residents of New Mexico. The State Library is also hosting a raffle, offering giveaways and more.
