(Santa Fe) - The Aging and Long-Term Services Department is using the month of June, which is Adult Abuse Awareness Month, to remind New Mexicans they are required by law to report suspected cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation of incapacitated adults to the agency's Adult Protective Services Division.

"In our state, we all have a duty to look out for vulnerable adults," said Secretary Myles Copeland. "If you see something that makes you suspect an adult might be in a situation where there's abuse, neglect, or exploitation, we urge you to report it to Adult Protect Services. The hotline to call is 1-866-654-3219."

From July 2014 to June 2015, Adult Protective Services investigated more than 5,900 cases across New Mexico. Of those substantiated allegations, 53 percent were self-neglect. If a case is substantiated, Adult Protective Services may help provide an intervention.

Governor Martinez also proclaimed June as Adult Abuse Awareness Month. You can read her proclamation here.
