Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement in recognition of Memorial Day, which is this Monday, May 28:

"On Memorial Day, we remember and honor fallen heroes like Marine Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez, a Guatemalan immigrant and one of the first servicemembers killed while serving in Iraq in 2003, who gave their lives to uphold and preserve our nation's principles and values.

"Memorial Day is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions of immigrant servicemembers to the fabric of our nation and their deeds, bravery and courage in the field of battle. Immigrants founded this country and have fought and died in every war in American history. For many immigrants, military service has been an honorable way to earn citizenship and give back to the country they love. The tales of fallen servicemembers who were posthumously granted their citizenship are an undeniable example of their duty and belief in our nation's ideals.

"As we mark another Memorial Day, we must fight for a future worthy of their sacrifice where immigrants are celebrated not disparaged; where immigrant servicemembers are welcomed not deported; and where spouses and children of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are protected from deportation."
