TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM – The Rio Grande Symphonic Band, formerly The Rio Rancho Symphonic Band, will present a concert of patriotic music, marches, and overtures at the New Mexico State Veterans Home, 992 S Broadway St, Truth Or Consequences, NM. The concert will be given on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the dining hall, and the public is cordially invited to attend.

The Rio Grande Symphonic Band is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit adult community wind and percussion ensemble based on the West Side in Albuquerque. It was founded in 2005 by music director John Emory as the Rio Rancho Symphonic Band, and presents 4 indoor concerts and 2 outdoor concerts per year. Recently the band's governing board has taken steps to expand the reach of the band to underserved communities outside the original performance sphere.

Community bands in the United States often emerged from militia or military bands. The popularity of early community bands can be attributed to the participation of thousands of ordinary citizens in these ensembles and the patriotic appeal of the music and performance. There is one estimate that there were 10,000 bands in the United States in 1889. Wartime patriotism, such as the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II, have added to the popularity and number of community bands.

So, in the spirit of the military heritage of the concert band, the Rio Grande Symphonic Band is proud to present, once again, a concert of patriotic music for our heroes residing at the New Mexico State Veterans Home, and for the people of the City of Truth or Consequences.
