Chaves County, NM- On March 20, 2019, NMSP Officer Ricky Romero (24) of Roswell, N.M., was arrested by the Chaves County Sheriff’s Department and charged with violating various state laws.

In early March, 2019, the Chaves County Sheriff’s Department opened a criminal investigation into Romero.  NMSP has fully cooperated with the Chaves County investigation, and will continue to do so.

Immediately after learning of the investigation, New Mexico State Police launched an internal affairs investigation and Romero was placed on administrative leave.  In addition to the criminal charges, he is facing discipline, including up to termination.

Police officers take an oath to uphold the law, and actions and behavior in violation of that oath and the public trust are intolerable.  NMSP strives to ensure our personnel are accountable to the public we serve. This service must be done with the upmost integrity and honesty.

Romero has been employed with State Police since May of 2017, and was stationed in Roswell.

Questions regarding the details of the criminal investigation and subsequent arrest of Romero should be directed to the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office.
