Dealing with the pandemic’s new normal is as stressful for young people as it is for adults.

The disruption in their routines, including lack of in-person socialization with peers, missing out on life events, and weaker connections with teachers, coaches, adult mentors and extended family, has a negative impact on adolescents’ social, emotional and mental well-being.

New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service will present “COVID Stinks: Let’s Talk About It,” a free four-part webinar for youth ages 14-18 designed to give teens some tools to help navigate and cope with different feelings.

The half-hour program, beginning at 7 p.m., will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from Dec. 1 through 10.

“The pandemic has dramatically changed our lives. Many of us, including youth, are feeling stressed and anxious,” said Karim Martinez, NMSU Extension family life and child development specialist. “Teens who attend this series will learn a variety of skills that promote mental health and wellness.”

The webinar will use a curriculum developed by the Ohio State University Cooperative Extension Service that covers topics such as coping with feelings of loss and disappointment, managing stress, growing our gratitude, and building resilience during difficult times.
