New Mexico State University will host the New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp, June 11-16, at the CS Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The camp is open to all youth, ages 15-19, who want to learn more about ranch management. The application deadline is May 5.

Applicants who are accepted will be notified May 12. The camp will invite 30 participants, three of those will be out-of-state applicants. Scholarship opportunities will also be available to applicants who are invited. The registration fee of $300 or payment arrangement is due on or before June 2.

“Ranch camp is unique because it is in a wonderful setting on a true working ranch, while having quite a bit of academics and public speaking,” said Sid Gordon, NMSU Extension agriculture agent and co-chair of NMYRMC.

Striving to provide ranching expertise to youth, the camp will cover a variety of ranching aspects. Participants will have the opportunities to learn animal care, breeding management, industry strategies, marketing tools, economics, natural resource management and rangeland monitoring.

A majority of these presentations will also provide the participants with hands-on experience. On the final day of the camp, each participant will be part of a team and give a ranch plan presentation.

Gordon explained that there are several applicants from last year’s camp that will receive first choice, since they were accepted but did not attend due to last year’s cancellation because of wildfires in the region.

“I am sure we will have a full camp, and we hope the educational opportunity is very rewarding for everyone,” he said.
