“Enchantorama!” dives into the history of the country’s longest-standing state travel magazine

SANTA FE — As a centerpiece of New Mexico Magazine’s centennial anniversary, the New Mexico History Museum will host “Enchantorama! New Mexico Magazine Turns 100” to celebrate the past 100 years of the publication’s storytelling efforts.

Officially unveiled on April 14, “Enchantorama!” showcases how the magazine has evolved over the decades, along with coverage of key moments in history and New Mexico’s unique cultural celebrations. The exhibit includes interactive timelines, artifacts and vintage photography and artwork from the publication’s earliest days to the present, as well as a life-size office suite designed to resemble the sort of space in which New Mexico Magazine would have been written, edited, and designed during the midcentury. The exhibit is set to run through February 16, 2024.

“Being able to open this exhibit and share New Mexico Magazine’s notable history with patrons wouldn’t have been possible without the writers, artists and creatives who have built this magazine into an award-winning publication,” said Tourism Department Cabinet Secretary Jen Paul Schroer. “In addition, we’re very grateful for the partnership and creative vision from the team at the Department of Cultural Affairs that helped bring this exhibit to life.”

“New Mexico Magazine is an important partner in telling our state’s story, and we couldn’t have been prouder to celebrate its contributions through this exhibition,” said Department of Cultural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Debra Garcia y Griego. “Both departments are dedicated to sharing New Mexico’s culture and arts, and throughout this process, we found that we not only shared a purpose but a voice. ‘Enchantorama!’ is unique proof of that.”

“It’s been an honor to be a part of a talented team celebrating 100 years of publication for such a renowned magazine,” said New Mexico Magazine CEO Ed Graves. “We can’t wait to see what the next 100 years will bring.”

In addition to “Enchantorama!” New Mexico Magazine will release its “Reasons to Love New Mexico” centennial issue this July. Accompanying the centennial issue is the magazine’s new centennial micro-website, which features select stories from past decades and more than 1,100 of its magazine covers. Additional centennial celebration offerings include trip giveaways, a cookbook, and a commemorative poster.

New Mexico Magazine, formerly titled “New Mexico Highway Journal,” first published in June 1923. The magazine now serves as the longest-standing state travel magazine and reaches a monthly audience of over 472,000 readers.
