Tonight, Jewish families will gather to light the chanukiah candles and celebrate the miracle of Hanukkah. This year, the joyous 8-night celebration of Jewish survival against great odds will take on added meaning as antisemitism intensifies around the world amid the war in Israel.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C.

Judah Maccabee, a Jewish warrior, and his family successfully led a revolt against King Antiochus and his armies who had cruelly oppressed the Jewish people, defiled their temple and made it illegal for them to practice their faith. After the rededication, it is believed a small vessel of oil miraculously kept the Temple menorah lit up for eight nights.

Hanukkah recognizes the strength and perseverance of the Jewish people. It reminds us that although there is much darkness in the world, we can bring light into our homes and wherever we go.

The Republican Party of New Mexico wishes the Jewish community in NM, Israel, and around the world a Happy Festival of Lights! Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
