Dorothy H. McNaughton, 92, went home to her Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014.

Originally from Hancock, Mich., she was the child of Art and Helmi Hurula. She earned her degree in English at Suomi College in Hancock and then became a certified to teacher through her work at the University of Michigan, Marquette. She taught at various schools in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She met and married David D. McNaughton in Hancock and they moved to Santa Rita, N.M., to raise three sons while her mining engineer husband worked at the Chino Mine. When the township of Santa Rita had to be abandoned because of pit expansion, the family relocated to Bayard. Mrs. McNaughton earned her master's degree in English at Western New Mexico University in 1968. As her children became high school students, she again taught in the Cobre school system, at Central Elementary. She started selling Avon products in the early 1970s and continued working as an Avon Lady into the middle 1980s. Shortly after her husband died in 1987, Mrs. McNaughton moved to Silver City where she resided until last Wednesday. She always placed her faith in God and her family first. She was also an avid musician and was organist for the Episcopal Church from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s. Her early keyboard training was on the piano, and she gave lessons to children in Santa Rita and Bayard.

Mrs. McNaughton leaves three adult sons. Clark A. McNaughton is a retired chemical engineer living with his wife, Ann, in Kennewick, Wash.; David A. McNaughton is a petroleum engineer working in Dallas, Texas; and Andrew H. McNaughton is an electrical engineer living in the greater Los Angeles, Calif., area. She also leaves two grandchildren, Steven Rigler of Amherst, Mass., and Mike McNaughton of Austin, Texas. She also leaves her longtime friend and companion, Bob Fuller of Silver City. The support and caring relationship they shared can only be admired by family and friends.
