Calvin Short1 rsCalvin Short2 rsCalvin Ben Short Jr., 94, entered eternal rest on Sunday, October 30, in Albuquerque. He was born in Pioneer, Texas, to Mamie Killian Short and Calvin B. Short. He lived in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.

As a young man, he came to Silver City on a football scholarship and interrupted his education to serve in the US Navy during World War II, returning to WNMU to complete his education. Calvin played for the WNMU football team for four years, serving as captain of the football team his senior year. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Education and began his lifelong career in education. He was an educator and administrator in Tularosa, Silver City, Ramah, and Zuni, eventually retiring from the Lordsburg schools. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who pushed his students to learn more about the world around them.

His hobbies were fishing, making fishing lures, tying flies and woodworking.

Calvin will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and dedication to his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He is survived by his son Mike (Robin) of Silver City, his daughter Carol Siegrist (Robert) of Albuquerque; his grandchildren Justin Short (Emily) of North Branch, MN, Jeff Short of Phoenix, Michael Siegrist (Raquel) of Houston, Brian Siegrist and Cathyrn Siegrist of Albuquerque; and his great granddaughters Stephanie Taylor Reyna of Albuquerque and Lucy Grey Siegrist of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Bea, his wife Neva Estes Short and his daughter Cathy. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and his great granddaughters.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Deacon Robert Siegrist officiating. Concluding service an interment will follow at Memory Lane cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the WNMU Foundation at P.O. Box 1158, Silver City, NM 88062. Please note in the memo line Calvin B. Short. Donations will go to the Education Department Scholarship Program.
