Jane Spencer Keeton was born January 6, 1942 in Bozeman, Montana to Dr. Roland G. Keeton and Marjorie Stewart Keeton. Jane grew up in Bozeman. She graduated with a degree in Art from Montana State University. She later attained her Masters in Psychology and her Doctorate in Counseling.

She married April 21, 1962 to Thomas J. Bates. Together they began a 27-year career in the United States Army. They have two daughters, Madeline Kelly and Robin Elizabeth. The family was stationed all over the world; Panama, Ecuador, Argentina, South Korea, West Germany and throughout the United States of America.

She was an avid art enthusiast and illustrated six children’s books. She also loved music and sang in her church choir. She grew up riding horses and snow skiing. Later, she developed a love of reading, traveling and play Mahjong.

Jane is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Bates of Silver City, NM, her daughters Madeline Bates Chalenor of Great Falls, MT and Robin Keeton Bates of Deming, NM, her brother, Stewart Charles Keeton of San Francisco, CA, her sister, Kathryn Keeton Eneboe of Ennis, MT and her five grandchildren and family, Amber Justine Bates and Karen Martinez Bates of Denton, TX, Nathan Dunnihoo of Hot Springs, AR, Michael Bates of Denton, TX, Leah Arington of Deming, NM, and Samuel Arington of Deming, NM.

The funeral service will be at The Episcopal Church of Good Shepherd in Silver City, NM, 10:30 a.m., July 13, 2019. Instead of flowers, the family asks to give any donations to “The American Diabetes Association Type 1 Cure for Diabetes” or to “The Church of Good Shepherd.”
