I have two questions for you today: What is your definition of SUCCESS and what is your plan to achieve that success? The definition of success is different for everyone depending on which stage of life they are currently in. For some, success may be defined as the completion of a totally encompassing business or personal goal that is the result of work done over a certain period of time, such as days, weeks or years. For other people, success may mean simply completing one small task as you go throughout your day like getting out of bed, arriving to work on-time or tackling an important issue that has been on your mind for a while. Success is personal and achieving it can be transformative to one’s life but it doesn’t always have to be a monumental endeavor for it to be meaningful.

No matter what your definition of success it is important that you have a plan to achieve it. I would say that the plan for how you achieve success is equal, if not more important, to your own definition of the word. The plan you set for achieving success must be well thought, and planned for, at every step. If your goal is simply to get out of bed, what are the steps you are going to take to accomplish that goal.

The first thing you may want to do is to understand WHY you want to get out of bed tomorrow. If getting out of bed means that you will be able to get a head start on searching for jobs then you will need to keep that in mind as you define your why. As you think about your job search tomorrow, you should try to define what the best time of day to go searching would be. Since the best time to search for a job is in the early part of the business day, such as between the hours of 9am-11am, then you should make your goal to get out of bed early enough to get dressed, eat breakfast and head into town. This means that you should probably shoot for a 7am wake up time and set your alarm clock to go off at that time.

What I’ve just described for you is the plan that you can set for yourself which can help create meaningful change in your life. If you set goals like this for yourself each day you will begin to create a habit of waking up, getting out of bed and searching for employment which will produce tremendous dividends in your life. The dividends you gain will be the result of your habitual, and diligent, attention to the process of simply getting out of bed. In order to create good habits in your life you must be habitual about creating them.
