🍿  Popcorn Can Change Your Life

By Charles Rein
Rein On All Fronts

For this month's book review, I selected a recent author who became my friend years ago. She begins her book with the first chapter by incorporating the theme of popcorn.

Using the metaphor to compare our lives to a simple kernel of corn this author invites the reader to enjoy the process of transformation, the journey of popping out your talents and make your dreams come true. There's also a "Leap of Popcorn" section in each of her chapters.

So if you choose a book that coincides with National Popcorn Day🍿(yes that's today, January19) hopefully you'll consider Micky Branco's book, "Where to Start When You Don't Know Where to Go."

You'll benefit and gain deep understandings of your own thoughts and will learn how to overcome your fears.

Even though I was jokingly accused of only reading till the third chapter of her book (not true Micky!) LOL! I'm inspired by her many stories.

Micky Branco, in addition to being a successfully published author, is also a multi-lingual adventurer, an educator, a personal development coach and a speaker. She's even fulfilled a childhood dream and led programs on Royal Caribbean cruise lines as she traveled the world! To borrow a common phrase, she indeed "grabs life by the horns" yet, nothing about this author is ordinary!

Mickey, originally from Brazil, wasn't born amazing, confident and successful. In fact she jokes that as a young girl, of all her ballet friends, she was the only one shaped "like a beach ball."  Furthermore, she was a shy girl who wasn't allowed to date. At age 16, she incurred the wrath of her mother, after being spotted innocently kissing a boy!

Meeting this adventurer, several years ago, I remember thinking, "This woman has got to write a book because her stories are astounding!"  At our meeting, pen in hand, I used my notebook to write down some of her stories, as fast as possible to help me remember.

Those stories which she shared over much laughter with me, found their way into her self-help book; stories about making new friends, then being abandoned by them! True tales of this Brazilian arriving in this "foreign country, the USA" and the countless challenges that she encountered and overcame! Or a success story, when she obtained an airplane ticket -Boston to New York- for two dollars and fifty cents, plus the cost of luggage!

In her book, she helps us dive deeper to understand our mind's perceptions and change them if we wish.  By changing our perceptions of life, we can create a different reality, because our present moments do not have to equal our future.

Finally Micky shares powerful sayings that have helped her:

"Stop asking permission from the world and simply give notice that you are coming."

She also advises phrases not to use with others, such as:

"Life is hard and everyone has problems. Cheer up and take vitamins."

While hearing these adventures from her lips, I felt entertained. After reading them, I felt entertained as well as educated. I'm glad she finally put these true stories down on paper. This book is like having a deep conversation with a good friend and that friend reminds us to find our voice in life, to pay attention to that voice, be honest with ourselves, work diligently and strive to succeed.

On National Popcorn Day, I can't think of a more appropriate book which helps us understand our own minds and rise to life's challenges.

Ahhh, popcorn. Whether it's sweet, crunchy kettlecorn or the traditional buttery, salty style, it's the classic snack we enjoy at movie theaters, amusement parks, stadiums, at home, with friends, and countless other places.

Remember, that just like the kernel, some people are like popcorn- they will only succeed when under heat or pressure.  POP!!
