Diversity. We are told on a daily basis by those that have a platform that we must value diversity in our society. Those of us that are paying attention know they do not really mean it or that their definition of diversity excludes groups with whom they disagree or see as the problem.

As I was preparing for my radio show, I saw an article about the comeback of the corset. The author of the article , who is a reporter on the fashion industry, set the course it never really goes out of style as there is a portion of the female demographic that still wears them for various reasons. But she credits the recent resurgence to the television show Bridgerton, which is set in the early 1800s and the corset is a big part of the show for some reason.

There is apparently a huge rift in the fashion world and probably in our world in some way amongst those that see the corset as a symbol of the patriarchy and the objectification of women. there are other women who like the feeling of wearing the garment saying that it makes them feel pretty and also empowered. Those that see the corset as a negative symbol of the oppression of women are of course denigrating those that like it. They are organizing protests both in person and online of the retailers who sell the garment and have taken to shaming those that have expressed a positive opinion. Typical progressive behavior.

But it points out the fact that diversity is not truly valued by those in our society that claim to be the champions of diversity. It seems they cannot just fathom that people have different likes or dislikes. They cannot comprehend that we all have different experiences or even genetic makeup that causes us to react differently to the same situation. They also do not seem to believe that people who belong to a specific demographic group can have vastly different opinions, likes, or desires. They want to put us all into nice little boxes and keep us there.

Can you imagine a world in which there was not a diversity amongst its inhabitants? We would all be driving the same cars, eating the same food, living in the same houses, and watching the same entertainment. Or would we even have some of those things? Because people viewed situations differently we have choices in almost everything we do. What would our world be like without those who thought differently from most people? Would we have some of the freedoms that we still enjoy or would we have some of the advancements in every aspect of our world? Probably not.

Diversity does make some people uncomfortable and I would bet dollars to doughnuts that many who do not truly value diversity are made uncomfortable by people who disagree with them or have different opinions. But we know that change does not come without discomfort and neither does advancement or true progress. We are at a juncture in our country's history where true diversity is being threatened more than at any other time. I know it sounds like a broken record, but it is incumbent upon us to become and stay involved. Lest we run the risk of being forced to be silent and homogeneous rather than diverse.
