Politicians are often successful in getting reelected because they know the majority of Americans are not paying attention often enough to realize that these elected officials are not keeping their campaign promises. So many politicians promised to cut taxes on the middle class or to improve the plight of what they describe as downtrodden groups, yet nothing changes. Blacks and Hispanics are still discriminated against and do not have the same opportunity as whites despite the promises politicians have made over the last 40 years.

Congressman Andy Biggs is a member of the house foreign affairs committee that is releasing its report on the origination of the coronavirus. There is significant documentation including emails, internal memos and testimony that prove the coronavirus was released from the Wuhan lab, possibly deliberately or possibly by accident. Even if by accident, congressman Biggs points out that the evidence indicates China allowed the virus to escape to the rest of the world and there can be no doubt that that was deliberate.

Congressman Biggs also confirmed what we have known about Dr. Fauci and the National Institute of health. The National Institute of health provided significant funding to the Wuhan lab to conduct gain of function research on the coronavirus even though the Obama administration had signed legislation making that illegal. Fauci has alternated between two explanations, the first being that no such funding was provided, but when that was proven to be a lie, he became the bureaucrat trying to change the definition of gain of function research.

The Republican congressman, in an interview on Fox Business News, said that the Republicans need to gain control of both houses of Congress in the midterm election in order to put teeth into any kind of change or action. He believes Dr. Fauci should face criminal charges. He also believes Department of Homeland Security Director Alejandro Mayorkas should face impeachment for allowing so many infected migrants to come into the United States and not taking any action to prevent them from spreading the disease. He points out correctly that illegal migrants are not subject to the same restrictions as those that are placed upon American citizens.

To say I am skeptical of Congressman Biggs' promise to punish those that have lied to us and caused Americans to die, if we give them a majority in Congress, would be an understatement. The Republicans talk a very good game when they are the minority party and cannot push their agenda. But give them some authority and control and they wither away like an un-watered lily in the Arizona summer. The republican minority in the House of Representatives introduced a bill to overturn Obamacare seven times. Once they gained control of the House of Representatives under Majority Leader Paul Ryan, they failed to introduce the same bill even one time. There are many more similar examples at the federal and state level.

I will remain an eternal optimist and hope that there are enough people challenging the incumbents in Congress on both sides of the aisle who want to change the way things are done. Maybe things really will change. OK, the realistic portion of my brain which remembers John McCain, Jeff Flake, Paul Ryan, John Boehner, Mike Lee and so many others tells me that I'm being overly optimistic. Either way, I won't quit trying.
