In keeping with our commitment to enhancing community safety and preparedness, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD), Gila Regional Medical Center (Stop-the-Bleed Program) and Cobre Consolidated School District to provide Active Shooter Training for the District’s entire staff. This training was initially provided by expert staff from LCPD, who trained GCSO staff to conduct the same high-quality training in the future.
This active shooter curriculum focused on the time period prior to the arrival of law enforcement and EMS on-scene when the initial actions taken by school staff would potentially save lives. It is this crucial brief time period prior to the arrival of law enforcement and EMS when quick, decisive practical action(s) taken by school staff are likely to have the most significant positive impact. This training consisted of both classroom instruction and multiple practical scenario-based exercises.
Staff attended one of three sessions offered at Cobre High School, the last was conducted on Friday January 31. A total of approximately 250 persons from Cobre Consolidated attended along with staff from Silver Consolidated Schools, CYFD and Grant County (various departments).
