A spokesperson for the Grant County Republican Party Committee reported that 94 conservatives attended its March 2020 ‘standing room only’ monthly meeting AT GCRPC headquarters where several candidates for local and federal positions spoke and answered questions. Ray Tavizon, chairman of the group stated, “We have seen quite a growth in our active membership during the last year as many people have decided it is time to get more involved. They don’t like the direction they see our state politics going.”

Kyle Brown, local businessman, formally announced he will be seeking the District 3 position on the Grant County Board of Commissioners. His father and grandfather both served as Grant County commissioners and feels it is time for him to step up to make a difference.

James ‘Jimbo’ Williams from Quemado introduced himself to the crowd, seeking to be our New Mexico senator in District 28. He is currently serving as chair of the local soil and water conservation district and has served as president of the New Mexico Association of Conservation Districts. He has also served as president of the local school board. He is running because he remembers advice from his dad, “If you don’t like how things are going, step up and do something about it.”

Yvette Herrell, of Alamogordo, also spoke, asking support for her bid to represent New Mexico’s Second District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mark Ronchetti, of Albuquerque, seeking to be the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat formerly occupied by Tom Udall, highlighted the meeting with high energy and a few chuckles. He shared about talking with his family about running for the senate seat, and his 11-year-old daughter’s comment was, “Well, Dad, everyone loves the weatherman, and everyone hates a politician.” Even so, he wants to be our voice in the senate. He said no one is coming down and defending Grant County. He will! He will support the very things that make up a large part of our county and state economies. New Mexico is not business friendly and he wants to change that.
