The Overlander Represents Region’s Outdoor Opportunities, Campus’ Proximity to Gila

Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University revealed a new official collegiate license plate this week.

The design features tall purple mountains and tree silhouettes, which are the backdrop for the WNMU Mustang Athletics logo and gold lettering saying “Home of the Mustangs.” Headlining the plate is “Western New Mexico University” in bold black type at top center.

Earlier this year, Mustang fans across the region selected a new WNMU license plate design.

Through the WNMU website, voters chose between a zippy purple and gold classic called The Crossover and a wilder design known as The Overlander.

Winning by a landslide was The Overlander, a theme inspired by journeys on high-mountain roads and trips off the beaten path.

“With our campus being situated so close to the nation’s first wilderness area, it makes sense for the WNMU collegiate license plate to depict the landscape we are all lucky enough to live, work, play and learn in. Those who participated by voting on the designs chose a plate that showcases one reason we’re all proud to be Mustangs,” said Dr. Joseph Shepard, who is President of WNMU.

The Overlander went into production when voting closed and is available through the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division now.

Ordering The Overlander means giving back to WNMU, as $25 of the $37 initial purchase fee and annual renewal to outfit a registered vehicle with the new collegiate plate is donated to the university.

New Mexico drivers can learn how to request the new license plate by visiting wnmu.edu.
