7th grader Mykayla Zamora enjoys Thanksgiving lunchAldo Leopold Charter School (ALCS) was awarded a $4000 from Single Socks to support highly nutritious lunches for all students. This grant is part of the Single Socks’ initiative to reduce hunger in Grant County.

ALCS serves lunches prepared by the dedicated kitchen staff at Guadalupe Montessori. The school is keen on providing the highest quality food from local sources and carrying out a zero-waste lunch program. All food waste is composted or fed to the goats and chickens at San Vicente Farm. In turn, ALCS students participate in programming at the farm to learn about livestock, soils enhancement, and sustainable agricultural practices. The USDA has recently funded a greenhouse at this site which will further expand the educational opportunities.

Aldo Leopold Charter School is a tuition-free public school with a focus on stewardship of the community and the natural environment.

Sixty-two percent of the school population qualifies for free and reduced lunch. The school offers small class sizes, after-school academic support, opportunity for paid internship with Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), dual-credit coursework with Western New Mexico University, and the opportunity to play team sports with either Silver High School or Cobre High School.
