Western New Mexico University designed a Spanish for Healthcare Professionals course upon special request and is offering it in spring 2023. The goal of the class is to have each student become compliant with the Spanish language to function better at the bedside with Spanish-speaking patients.

The three credit-hour class is geared specifically for those entering or already practicing in the medical field. Those who already hold bachelor’s degrees may take it as a workshop and should apply to WNMU as non-degree seeking students.) Students may also take the class more than once.

Spanish for Healthcare Professionals is a hybrid web class held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. during the spring 2023 semester.

Upon completion of this course, students will understand the spoken Spanish equivalent of phrases and useful words, speak basic phrases and words in Spanish for tasks specific to medical settings, read and comprehend the meaning of Spanish phrases and vocabulary in context, understand Latino cultural traditions or customs and belief systems regarding illnesses of the body, mind and spirit (curanderismo).

This course qualifies for financial aid.

Apply to WNMU here. Then register for SPAN 413 (undergraduate level three credit hour course) or SPAN 580 (graduate level workshop).
