SUMMARY:GNPS November Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Gila Native Plant Society meeting, “Post-fire Status of Goodding’s
onion (Allium gooddingii) in New Mexico” — Presentation via Zoom by Daniela
Roth, New Mexico State Botanist\nThe Gila region is home to a number of ra
re plants. One of those is the delicate Goodding’s onion (Allium gooddingii
), a plant species only found in Arizona and New Mexico. The majority of th
e populations occur on the Gila National Forest and the adjacent Apache-Sit
greaves National Forest in Arizona. Since 2006 over 95% of known locations
in AZ and NM have burned in seven different wildfires. Post-fire studies ha
ve shown that although plants largely survive the direct impacts of the fir
es, long term survival is questionable due to drastic changes in habitat, p
ost-fire floods, and post-fire rehabilitation efforts.\nNo one is better qu
alified to bring us up-to-date on the status of this rare plant than Daniel
a Roth. Daniela is the New Mexico State Botanist and Program Manager for th
e Endangered Plant Program located within the Forestry Division of the Ener
gy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department. She holds a Bachelor’s Degr
ee from Oregon State University in Botany and Wildlife and a Master‘s Degre
e in Fire Ecology. From 1997 to 2009 she worked for the Navajo Natural Heri
tage Program, promoting rare plant conservation and documenting rare plant
occurrences from the backcountry of the 17-million-acre reservation of the
Navajo Nation. Prior to coming to New Mexico, she worked for the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service on the conservation and recovery of rare and endangere
d plants of southern and central Utah. She has been with the New Mexico End
angered Plant Program since 2012, where she continues her work on endangere
d plant conservation issues and documentation.\nAs always, the public is we
lcome. Those interested in joining in the Zoom presentation at 7:00 pm on F
riday, November 19, at 7:00 pm, should send a request for a link to This em
