SUMMARY:“Circles of Vulnerability,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City
LOCATION:3845 N Swan Street
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Johnston will discuss using Brené Brown's book "The Gifts of Imper
fection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You
Are" as a post-Covid “life raft.”\nJohnston will explain what “circles of v
ulnerability" are, and how they are our best mental health buoy and our bes
t buffer against feelings of shame. \n“We must have these circles of vulner
ability, but who should we include in them?” she asked.\nJohnston said that
Covid had a profound effect on people’s mental health and that during Covi
d, some of us who thought our mental health was strong discovered there wer
e holes, and that was scary.\nAnd that during Covid, some of us who knew ou
r mental health was already vulnerable became quite destabilized.\nShe adde
d, “During Covid, some of us who found regular life a bad fit, started to f
ind home life--introspective life—much more preferable. Losing that, this n
ext year, seemed to be walking backward.”\n“Which one are you? Would you li
ke to talk about the paradox of how to realistically embrace who you really
are, while at the same time believing that living the life you want is pos
sible?” Johnston said.\nJennifer Johnston is a former mental health counsel
or, a current psychology professor, and a vulnerable person with imperfecti
ons, navigating her best life. \nThere are speakers on the patio if you wis
h to enjoy the service outside.\nThis Sunday there will be a Children’s Rel
igious Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years
old and up to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridge
, a former CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on the theme of
“Generosity” this Sunday.\nUUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most r
ecent UUA Guidelines:\nWe will not be serving food or drinks in the buildin
g until further notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoo
rs and out except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refres
hments on the patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.\n
