SUMMARY:“Engaged vs Educated: The Evolution of an Elected Official,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
LOCATION:3845 N Swan Street
DESCRIPTION:Politicians have long used emotion to sway public opinion – Aristotle discu
ssed emotion as one of the pillars of rhetoric. But emotion as persuasion w
orks another way too. Highly charged emotions, whether inflamed by truth or
by misinformation, are used by vocal citizens as a way to press elected of
ficials to take action in a way those citizens want. Most of us have read o
r heard news about groups shouting down elected officials, school board rep
resentatives, and others in positions of public service.\nThis Sunday Alici
a Edwards will discuss her experience of how emotional outrage is taking ov
er rational thought, discussion, and action.\nAlicia Edwards is the Coordin
ator for Healthy Kids Healthy Communities Grant County and is the former Ex
ecutive Director of The Commons. She is currently serving her second, four-
year term on the Grant County Board of Commissioners. She is also a publish
ed poet, author, photographer, and sculptor whose art and images are in pri
vate collections in the US, Canada and England. Edward’s idea of adventure
is a backpack, a one-way ticket to anywhere and has traveled in all 50 stat
es and five continents. Her favorite conveyances for travel are her feet, a
bicycle, or a sailboat.\nThere are speakers on the patio if you wish to en
joy the service outside.\nThis Sunday there will be a Children’s Religious
Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years old and
up to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridge, a for
mer CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on the theme of “Natur
e” this Sunday.\nUUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA G
uidelines:\nWe will not be serving food or drinks in the building until fur
ther notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoors and out
except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refreshments on t
he patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.\n \n
