Attacking the industry that helps support your community and our state isn’t just happening in New York.

Yesterday a bill that would impact our energy industry was heard in the Commerce Committee. It reminded me of the New York headlines where politicians celebrated the loss of 25,000 Amazon jobs with a base pay of 100k a year.

Oil and gas represents 1/3 of our state budget and over 80% of education funding. They employ over 100k people, almost all making over 100k. It is critical that we maintain a stable and reliable business climate in New Mexico.

Isolating royalty fees without factoring in our taxes, licensing fees, and all the other costs of doing business is misleading. Today the overall charge to the Oil and Gas for doing business in N.M. is balanced with our neighboring states. We can not disrupt this balance. We must remain competitive.

Additionally, there are bills attacking the mining industry in my district. We all want reasonable laws but attacking the thousands of jobs in mining to please radical special interests isn’t the answer for our state.

These industries are powered by our neighbors and friends and they deserve our respect.

Rep. Rebecca Dow
NM District 38

Editor's Note: The bill to raise royalties on oil and gas was defeated yesterday in a bipartisan manner. But the mining bills remain on the table
