Unconstitutional legislation was ramrodded through Session without proper discourse

Albuquerque, February 14--Last night's New Mexico House passage of SB5, known as the Red Flag bill, is the latest example of how left-leaning Democrats are tearing away at the fabric of our great state. By a vote of 39-31, the House snatched away New Mexicans' Constitutional rights. This legislation, allowing authorities to confiscate firearms if they feel a homeowner may be a threat to himself or others, clearly violates peoples' 2nd Amendment rights, due process and search and seizure protocol. The bill is essentially a progressive Democrats' gun grab.

What makes matters worse, is that leadership shoved this bill through the legislature like a runaway train. Twenty-four hours after the Senate approved the bill, Speaker Egolf quickly assigned it to the 5-member Consumer and Public Affairs Committee where Republicans' called for the legislation to go to the House Judiciary Committee to examine further the legal and Constitutional ramifications. This was ignored, as was the public's right to fully express their concerns. The clock was ticking, and the important legislation was fast-tracked with public and law enforcement input on the bill limited to minutes.

"It's unfortunate that the left's political game has taken the position of taking away the rights of law-abiding New Mexicans. Now the governor is going to allow authorities to go into homes of innocent people and take their legal firearms away. These homeowners will now have to prove that they've done nothing wrong. It's an unconstitutional gun grab and will lead to false accusations and prosecutions. What's stopping an angry neighbor or spiteful co-worker from telling police that someone is a threat?" said Anissa Tinnin, Executive Director of the Republican Party of New Mexico.

As Gov. Lujan Grisham prepares to pen her name on the bill, she and her progressive Democratic loyalists must know that she's hurting the state and stealing peoples' sacred rights.
