“Igniting the Power and Promise of Youth,” at the Unitarian Universalist
Friday, January 27, 2023, 10:00am |
Zia Davis will talk about the importance of the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters program which focuses on creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships. She’ll explain how a careful matching process is utilized to build unique relationships that help children achieve success in school, avoid risky behaviors and improve their self-confidence.
A special musical guest, Oliver Davis, award winning fiddle player, will perform during the service.
This Sunday will be a Dedicated Offering where the regular collection will be donated to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters office in Silver City.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national organization that has been helping to ignite and empower children’s potential since the early 1900’s. Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region encompasses most of Northern New Mexico, Dona Ana, Luna, and Grant Counties,” Davis said.
The organization’s regional offices are in Santa Fe, but all local events, recruitments and match supports are done locally.
“Our unique one-to-one mentoring helps children achieve success in school, avoid risky behaviors, and improve their self-confidence. We get to know each adult volunteer and child mentee very well so that we can make the best match possible. Then, I personally support each match and the child’s family to ensure that all of their needs are met throughout the match,” she added. “We also have monthly events for the matches and will have quarterly community events beginning in 2023.”
