SUMMARY:"This is Water," at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City
LOCATION:3845 N Swan Street
DESCRIPTION:A video presentation by David Foster Wallace, moderated by Joe Neri.\nDavid
Foster Wallace was a professor and writer and is most known for the commen
cement speech he delivered to the graduating class of Kenyon College in Ohi
o in 2005. “This Is Water” is considered one of the most significant speech
es of its kind and is a trove of practical wisdom for living in the real wo
rld.\nWallace discusses the “unsexy” but very real challenges of day-to-day
living, describing the unconscious, default settings that we all use to co
pe in mainstream society. The purpose of education, he asserts, is not to l
earn how to think but to learn how to choose what to think about.\nJoe Neri
will lead a discussion of the concepts in this riveting and thought-provok
ing hybrid video.\nDavid Foster Wallace was an American novelist, short sto
ry writer, essayist, and professor of English and creative writing. Wallace
is most widely known for his 1996 novel “Infinite Jest,” which Time Magazi
ne cited as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.
His posthumous novel, “The Pale King” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize
for Fiction in 2012.\nWallace grew up in Illinois and attended Amherst Col
lege. He taught English at Emerson College, Illinois State University, and
Pomona College. In 2008, he died by suicide at age 46 after struggling with
depression for many years.\nJoe Neri has been a resident of Silver City an
d a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City since 20
 18. Among other things, he is a student of “The Four Agreements” by Don Mig
uel Ruiz, as well as “The Five Levels of Attachment” by Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr
.\nNeri is also a musician. He bought his first guitar in Greenwich village
in 1962 and has been a musician of the times ever since. In addition to pe
