SILVER CITY- In the 2012 agricultural census Grant County had 407 farms and reported the primary agricultural product produced as being cattle with some small sheep herds. Of the 407 farms, 317 were reported as having cattle and calves in Grant County. The total amount of cattle produced in the county was 27,000 head. Total cattle price receipts from cattle production equal $29.4 million dollars. Thus, cattle production in the county is of significance to the local economy.

NMSU Grant County Cooperative Extension Service will host a Cattle Producer Workshop on April 30, 2019 from 6-8pm at the Grant County Cooperative Extension Office located at 2610 N. Silver St. in Silver City, NM

Producers will hear from Dr. Marcy Ward, NMSU Extension Livestock Specialist on “Nutrition of the Beef Cow.” Also, local native Dr. John Wenzel, NMSU Extension Veterinarian, will present on “Trichomoniasis and Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Updates.” In conclusion, Grant County 4-H/Agriculture Agent, Jessica Swapp will present on “Extension in Action.”

The event is free and refreshments will be provided. “Participants can expect to walk away from the evening with a better understanding of how to manage the nutritional needs of their cow herd and stay up to date on BQA standards as well as how the extension office can help,” said Swapp.
