Learn to drive a haul truck in a virtual reality simulator at Freeport McMoran’s activity center at the Silver City Museum Annex on Saturday from 10am-2pm. Other activities include a 3-D drone flyover experience of the mine pit.On Saturday, February 15, as part of the Territorial Charter Day celebrations, the Silver City Museum will be hosting two fun programs for children (and kids-at-heart): mining and geology activities in the Museum Annex from 10am-2pm, courtesy of Freeport-McMoRan, and Storytelling in the Museum Education Room at noon and 2pm.

Participants can explore the past and present of our mining heritage with a journey through a series of fun, immersive, hands-on learning experiences. These include: Playdough Mountain Drilling, where geologists will lead an all-ages activity and provide an up-close look at unique rocks from the Chino and Tyrone mines; remote-control truck races through an obstacle course; a Selfie Station with mining props; and Panning for “Gold” like an 1880’s prospector. 

Parked next to the Annex will be a huge trailer containing a Haul Truck Simulator, where participants can experience driving a giant truck into the mine with a one-on-one instructor! Once two of the other activities are completed, participants can get a virtual-reality truck-driving lesson. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

There will also be a virtual reality drone flyover experience of the mine operations, historical photos of the Chino and Tyrone mines on display, and an info booth.

Meanwhile, just down the block in the Museum Education Room, historian and performer Hugh Epping will weave true tales of wonder and enchantment from our collective past for audiences of all ages. Sessions begin at noon and 2pm.
