Western New Mexico University Department of Cultural Affairs Presents: The Mexican Rebozo: History and Artisans of Mexico
Silver City, NM — As part of the ongoing commitment of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ to offer the Fiesta Latina community rich and engaging programming the Transcending Borders Film and Presentation Series has gone virtual. A lineup of documentaries on traditional Mexican crafts and techniques, Transcending Borders includes live Zoom presentations with the featured Fiesta Latina artisans. The second in a series of four presentations will take place on October 7 at 10 AM. All films are currently available online.
The presentation covers the topic of the Mexican rebozo. The film, Rebozos con Pluma of Ahuirán, features juried artisan Albertina Bautista fromMichoacán, Mexico. The live discussion, “The Mexican Rebozo: History and Artisans of Mexico" will be presented by Stephanie Schneiderman, Latin American tour guide, artisan advocate and rebozo collector.
Faye McCalmont, Special Assistant to the President for Cultural Affairs, and Festival Director has worked with Ms. Schneiderman for many years to help curate the Fiesta. “Stephanie is an incredible advocate for the indigenous women weavers of Mexico. She truly loves their culture and has studied the history and the art of the rebozo for years. Her collection rivals most museum collections. We are truly fortunate to have her expertise available to us for this presentation.”
