Live, outdoor theatre returns with “Bug”, by Lainie Vansant. A fresh take on the Three Billy Goats Gruff. “Bug” is the story of a sensitive teenaged troll who is being bullied to eat a goat. This 30 minute play will be performed by the SCCT Youth Theatre Project actors at Main Street Plaza on December 11 and 12 at 3:00 pm. Performances are free (donations encouraged). Director Brenda McFarlane advises audiences to dress warmly.

The young cast (ages 13-18) has been meeting weekly since July.

(Photo courtesy of Bruce Bloy)“We’ve been holding guerilla-like outdoor rehearsals and workshops throughout town every Sunday” explains McFarlane, “Covid has presented incredible challenges but theatre is a flexible art and teenagers are uniquely suited to adjust fast to new situations. This production of Bug is the result.” The cast includes Savanna Egge, Makayla Jaurequi, Christian Kilgore, Mia Riley, and Jules Stites as members of the Goat Family; Monte Valenzuela and Eva Engstrom are the bullying Trolls; and Teneal Solberg takes on the title role of “Bug”.

The SCCT Youth Project's goal is to empower young people with the ability to express themselves through theatre and public presentation. This is a free program. Project Director, Brenda McFarlane, produced and directed her own plays in Toronto, Los Angeles and New York. She specializes in new works and collaborative creations. She emphasizes social responsibility and heartfelt theatre that matters to the audience and the artists involved.

The cast of “Bug” was supported by Project Assistant, Wendy Spurgeon, a drama teacher at Aldo Leopold Charter School, and hostess of SCCT Radio Hour on KURU 89.1 FM. “Brenda and I are so proud to support this talented young cast as they bring live, outdoor theatre performances back to Silver City”, says Spurgeon. “Chairs are provided, to be placed by family groups for appropriate distance and comfort.”

“Bug” plays at 3:00 pm on Dec. 11 and 12 on the Main St. Plaza, located off of Bullard St. between 7th and 8th streets next to Big Ditch Park in Silver City, NM.
