Silver City -- The Silver City Museum's beloved Christmas holiday tradition, Victorian Christmas, is expanding this year to better reflect the desert Southwest and the region's rich cultural diversity. The holiday celebration, now known as “Victorian Christmas and More” takes place from 11 am to 3 pm, Saturday, December 10.

"We are expanding this holiday celebration to reflect the entirety of Grant County's rich, cultural diversity and history," said Bart Roselli, museum director. "We've seen many different themes over the years, especially in keeping with the period of our building’s original construction, but now we want to explore the holiday traditions of all Grant County residents."

The revamped holiday festival features a wide variety of musical acts in the courtyard, including mariachi singer Angelica Padilla, the Big Ditch Crickets, a community dance band that plays traditional folk music from New Mexico and around the world, the duo Celtic Rose, singing melodic ballads and folk songs, and the Silver Chorale will ignite the holiday spirit with Christmas carols. Cowboy poet Stuart Hooker will read some of his original works and the Silver City Community Theater will also perform.

Activities for children include tin ornament making, and the local chapter of the Audubon Society will host a birdseed ornament making station. Father Christmas will be on hand to gift books to all the good girls and boys, courtesy of Literacy Link Leamos. The Grant County Chapter of the Imagination Library will also be distributing free books for children. An "Ebenezer gift exchange" will be held in which children are encouraged to bring a wrapped gift valued at $10 or less, then choose another to take home. Adults are also invited to bring a wrapped gift for the Ebenezer gift exchange for adults.

The museum will be decorated for the holidays, and apple cider and cookies will be free to everyone. The Silver City Museum Society will be selling Mexican-style hot chocolate donated by Silver City Food Basket, LULAC is offering homemade pozole for sale, and La Bonita Bakery will be on-site selling tamales and other items.

The museum gift store offers hundreds of fun and affordable holiday gift items, and will be open during the event for holiday shopping. Museum Society members receive a special, one-time holiday discount of 20 percent!  Event sponsors include First American Bank and Americorps.
