The Historical Society of New Mexico will hold its annual conference in Silver City from March 30 through April 1. Full schedule below in PDF format.

Former U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, a Silver City native, will give a special presentation, "Roots of Dysfunction in the U. S. Congress" on March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Global Resource Center at Western New Mexico University.

And Professor Michelle Hall Kells, of UNM, will make a keynote presentation, "The Public Memory of 'Salt of the Earth,'" on March 30 at 5 p.m. at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Conference and Business Center.

The three-day conference features 35 sessions, the society's largest number ever. More than 90 presenters will explore events, cultures, stories, and perspectives of New Mexico history, from the earliest inhabitants to the recent past.

Other special events include a benefit luncheon for Silver High School's National History Day and ProStart programs, with food service and presentations by National History Day students, on March 31, as well as local tours and museum visits.

For the first time, the history conference will be held in unique, friendly Silver City, a town rich in history and culture. Home to Western New Mexico University, Silver City boasts historic neighborhoods, two museums, a thriving downtown, and a vibrant arts community.
