Using richly saturated color and hypnotic black-and-white interludes, filmmaker Helmut Dosantos takes viewers through salt pans, deserts, highlands, jungle, and underground mines—paying tribute to those who fight to preserve their cultural identity amidst the shadows of modernization.

Saturday, June 17th at 11am-12:30pm Light Hall Theater Porfirio Gutierrez, a Zapotec native based in Ventura, California has carefully tended to his relationship with nature his entire life, coaxing over 200 colors from plants. In this talk, Maestro Porfirio Gutiérrez will explore the histories embedded in his textiles, with a specific focus on the Cochineal insect, the scale insect that gifted the world the color red.
