SANTA FE – Senate Republican Whip, Senator Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho) introduced Senate Bill 28 to provide a tax deduction for teachers who purchase school supplies. The bill would allow for up to $500 of income tax deductions this year and up to $1,000 next year.
Senator Brandt released the following statement regarding his bill:
"It is unconscionable to me that in a state where we are spending a record $4.3 billion dollars on education—roughly $13,500 per student—teachers would still have to go into their own pocket to purchase school supplies for their classrooms. This bill is a stopgap measure to give teachers a bit of a break until we can deal with the monumental bureaucratic bloat that is keeping dollars out of classrooms."
Senate Bill 28 will be heard this Thursday in Senate Tax, Business, and Transportation Committee at 1:30 PM.
