The Southwest Festival of the Written Word kicked off Thursday evening with a reception at JW Art in Hurley.
The evening featured Randy Carr, performing act one from his one-man show “Tuck.” Local historian Terry Humble discussed his recent publication, Santa Rita del Cobre.
During the event, authors Anthony Romero (Saloons of Santa Clara) and Christopher Saxman (The Drive to Cheynne and Burnout) autographed their new books.
During the entire weekend of the Southwest Festival of the Written Word, the Gallery will have on display a special selection of the artwork of Joseph Wade, Elvira Godfrey, Christopher Saxman and Leighton Fossom.
Also available will be Wade’s hand-made book Poetry2, a large selection of Golden West Publisher’s Southwestern specialty cookbooks, as well as several of this area's historical p ublications.
Original cover designs by artist Fred Barraza for M.H. "Dutch" Salmon's trilogy: Signal to Depart, Forty Freedoms and Home is the River will also be displayed. The trilogy books, published by High-Lonesome Books, will be available for sale at the gallery.

Gallery owner Joe Wade displays his limited edition (200) handmade book, "Poems2," a collection of six Silver City poets' works. Wade says that he merely "supplied the craft" of making the book, but "it's for them" [the authors].
