According to Bayard Police Chief Lee Alirez, the Quantar system the Tri-City area uses for public safety communication has crashed. He stated the system has exceeded its life expectancy and intermittently heats and shuts down and then comes back online. Alirez said he was granted permission from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office to begin utilizing their frequency effective Wednesday, Nov. 6, at approximately noon. According to Alirez, when he broached the subject with GCSO, “they were all over it.” He said they have a good relationship with the sheriff’s office and were fortunate to have their assistance.

The Motorola Quantar system has been in place almost 30 years, and was supposed to be functional for only 20, Alirez told the Beat. He said the system cannot be repaired and parts are no longer available. ”If we can get state legislative funding for a new system, including car radios and everything, we should have a new one in place sometime next year,” he stated.
