Luna County, NM – On March 12, 2020 at about 07:00 a.m. the New Mexico State Police responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on New Mexico State Road 26 at around mile post 22 north of Deming. 

The initial investigation indicates a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a thirty-seven-year-old male from Cedar Rapids, IA was traveling westbound on State Road 26. For reasons still under investigation the Jeep crossed the center line and drove into oncoming eastbound traffic. The Jeep collided head-on with an eastbound 2006 Honda Civic driven by Alfredo Granados (55) of Deming, NM. Mr. Granados suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Two passengers in the Civic suffered various injuries, their current conditions are unknown. 

The driver of the Jeep was airlifted to an area hospital for his injuries. His current condition is unknown. Alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor to the crash and seatbelts were not properly used. This crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
