Candidates James Williams (for New Mexico State Senate District 28) and Thomas Shelley (for Grant County Commission District 5) jointly petitioned District Court to impound ballots and related materials for the purpose of conducting an examination.

"We are compelled to do so because poll watchers in the recent election process in Grant County reported alleged violations of election law; for example, appointed observers were not allowed to oversee the processing of absentee ballots," they said in a joint statement. "Therefore, to ensure that there was nothing to hide, we will conduct an examination of ballot materials as allowed by State law."
