The Copper Cowbelles, the local chapter of the national organization dedicated to the livestock industry promoting beef and beef education, has selected 3 awardees for their annual scholarship. Four hundred dollars will be awarded to each applicant. This year's scholarships are in memory of past Cowbelle members, Helen Downs and Winnie Foy Momsen.

Recipients must be a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in a college level school, a graduate from a Grant County high school and pursuing an agriculturally related field of study. They must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better in their college classes and submit a transcript with their application.

Ryan McCauleyThe first awardee and this year is Ryan McCauley. Ryan is a senior majoring in Animal Science at NMSU. Ryan is a member of the "third generation" from a long time ranching family south of Silver City. He pursues his degree in this field to educate himself to handle challenges cattle producers face now and in the future. His plans are to return to the family ranch and continue their traditions. Ryan also participates in rodeo events with NMSU's rodeo team. Ryan grew up in both the 4-H and FFA programs in Grant County, participating on many winning teams with Livestock Judging and Wool.

Sabrina ThueraufSabrina Thuerauf is also an awardee for this year's scholarship. She is beginning her sophomore year at NMSU and is pursuing her undergraduate degree in Animal Science and plans to follow through and become a Veterinarian. Sabrina, an avid horsewoman, has competed at Southwest Quarter Horse Association events in reining and cow events. She also was active in 4-H and FFA, winning the Hippology 4-H contest several times at the state level, and was an officer for the local FFA chapter. She has work experience in the veterinary field working under the direction of Dr. Clay Allred for two years at Arenas Valley Animal Clinic. She is very much dedicated to pursuing this field.

Tanah LoweMiss Tanah Lowe, entering her sophomore year also at NMSU is pursuing a degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in Equine and a Minor in Creative Writing. Tanah's career goal is to become a 4-H agent. Tanah is a very accomplished horsewoman as well. She enjoys riding, showing, and competing in horse events. She, along with Miss Thuerauf did public speaking events related to equine gear, as well as wining the state 4-H Hippology contest numerous times. Tanah spent this summer interning in the Grant County Extension 4-H office. Her contributions were great, with youthfulness, creative ways to reach audiences, and general support. Tanah flourished in the 4-H program. She began attending annual Senior Leadership Retreats early and became a State 4-H Diplomat her freshmen year of college. She credits these experiences for her career choice.
