Summer Internship for 8 th -12 th graders

[SILVER CITY, NM, May 5, 2019—] For six weeks beginning June 3, The Commons: Center for Food Security and Sustainability presents its paid summer internship program, Rooted: Youth Growing Change. This internship will bring together 8 teens (grades 8 - 12) to study how our food goes from farm to table.

The Commons will be hosting the internship this summer from June 3 - July 10. Participants will have the
opportunity to grow, prepare, and market local foods. The weekly schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays
from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Work will be focused on preparing
produce and food to bring and sell at the Wednesday Farmers’ Market (Ace Hardware parking lot from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm). Mondays will be dedicated to working in the gardens: harvesting, tending, and maintaining the crops. Tuesdays will be spent in the commercial kitchen, preparing for Wednesday Farmers Market. The teens will work together as a team to learn farming and business skills, experience nature, explore issues of hunger and community, challenge themselves, and have fun!

Successful completion of the internship comes with many rewards: skills to grow your own food for family or market, an introduction to small business management, cooking skills, basic bio-regional food knowledge (like how to process Amaranth and Chia), a bi-weekly stipend of $100 (totaling $300 for the summer!), and professional service skills.
