Roped In: The History of Rodeo in Grant County and Beyond

Don Turner, Sheriff of the Westerners and former owner of the T Box and Easy Bar ranches will speak about how rodeo developed from its roots as an occupational teaching tool to become a popular sport and spectator event in Grant County and throughout the Southwest.

The Meaning of the Inanimate
Presentation/Discussion Friday, March 27, 6-8 pm,
Silver City Museum WNMU’s current artist in residence and Brazilian native, Joao Galera will give a presentation of the Meaning of the Inanimate. This intimate gathering will take place in the museum as Joao encourages us to look at the museum exhibits from a new perspective.

Families and artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to express themselves in clay and contribute to Joao’s upcoming collaborative work.

Preserving the Gila

Michael Berman is the founding board member of the Gila Resources Information project as well as an award-winning photographer and recipient of both the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in New Mexico and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Michael has multiple books to his name including Gila: Radical Visions; The Enduring Silence.

The Silver City Museum welcomes conference attendees with an open house. Tour the 1881 home of one of Silver City's most influential families.  Explore exhibits about ranching, mining and the formation of the Big Ditch.  Light refreshments will be served.  Tour on your own or join a Docent guided tour. All free.  A suggested donation of $5 helps underwrite the costs of exibits and programs. As a special offer each conference attendee receives a generous discount in the Museum's gift shop which is packed with regional souvenirs and one of the best selections of Southwest New Mexican local history.
